Question Of The Month

Dear Jack:

Why is spaying and neutering so popular nowadays?

Miguel, Columbia, Maryland

Vets and humane organizations agree that control of animal populations is crucial to stem the tide of animal illness, neglect and abuse. Both male and female dogs can live longer, healthier lives if they are spayed or neutered as mature pups. Please consult your veterinarian about the best time to neuter your pet.

Jack Russells can generally be operated on at 5-6 months of age. This will prevent unwanted heat cycles and pregnancies in females, and "marking" and other behavior in males. Also, Jacks which have been operated on at a young age are less likely to wander, and are easier to train.

Until next month,

Jack!
